Today I went walking with my friend Amy, who is a wonderful writer. We were talking about books we'd been reading. I mentioned one, and she said, "I always thought maybe I could write something like that." "Yes!" I said. "You're totally right. You could." I know Amy and I've read her books, so I was pretty certain in my conviction. But even if I didn't know her, even if I'd never read her work, I probably would have said the same thing.
Why?
Because, as Martha Beck puts it: "People always long to be what they already are."
Because that feeling you get when you read something and your chest physically aches and you think, “I want to write something like this!” That feeling is nothing more than a part of you recognising itself. It is the part of you that is meant to do the thing saying, "And now we must do it. Enough waiting. We're ready.”
If you are yearning to make something, you already have everything it takes to make it. You don't need to wait any longer. You can start now.
