No one can make something out of nothing. We need fuel to create. Fuel is sunshine. It's lying on your back, listening to the wind soughing through the trees. Fuel is a conversation with an interesting friend; a slow amble through a museum; an hour listening to music you really love. It's going to the bookshop to run your finger along the spines of books that already exist. It's hanging out in the hardware store, shuffling through colour swatches. You can fuel up pretty much anywhere. It doesn't have to be expensive. Natural light works. So does picking a place that seems beautiful to you. Pick a place with textures, a place where your senses are engaged. The beach, the zoo, the little coffee shop down the road where all the old Italian men hang out, playing backgammon and drinking espressos. Go to the park. Go to the shops and really look at everything: the glazed, rubbery marrows, the rainbowed jars of jam. What I'm saying is: go somewhere. When you're stuck, when you don't know what to do next. Get out. Take a notebook with you, take your voice recorder, take your sketch book. Come home with a fuller heart and tell about it.
